Understanding Your Risk of Breast Cancer

Researchers have found that women who get breast cancer often have certain risk factors in common. These risk factors include:

  • Have had breast cancer in the past
  • Have close relatives who have had breast cancer
  • Have a 5-year Gail Risk of 1.7% or greater
  • Have a BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutation

Your doctor can tell you whether you are at high-risk for breast cancer based on the risk factors in your family history and medical history.

FirstCyte® Breast Test
The FirstCyte Breast Test is used to collect cells from inside the milk ducts. The sample is sent to a laboratory where it is analyzed to determine if the cells are normal or abnormal. Abnormal cells are called "atypical" cells. While atypical cells don't necessarily progress to cancer, they do indicate an increased relative risk of breast cancer.

Collecting and analyzing cells from the breast allows doctors to provide risk information that is unique to each individual woman. Because the FirstCyte Breast Test can be repeated, it also provides another way for high-risk women to check their risk status over time.
